Unlike the Pistachio Tree which gives us pistachio nuts, the Mastic Shrub produces a very aromatic resin known as mastic, or gum. Since ancient times, this Mediterranean shrub has been highly prized for this resin, which forms in droplets on the surface of the trunk and large branches and is used to sweeten the breath and whiten teeth. The gum used by Clarins Laboratories comes from Chios, an island in the Aegean Sea renowned for the high quality production of this resin.
