How does Clarins source its ingredients?
To further our quest to source only the highest-quality raw materials, we own and operate two open-air production sites: the Domaines Clarins. By 2030, we hope to source one-third of all our raw ingredients from these two sites.
One of these sites, Domaine Serraval, is also home to the Clarins Herbarium: our ingredient library. Here, Clarins catalogues and studies each species of plant, tree, fruit and root that goes into our formulas, continuing to innovate while tracing our ingredients from field to jar.
What are the Domaines Clarins?
Located in the Gard region of Southern France, Domaine Sainte-Colombe is split into an open-air farm and production site, and a research laboratory. Long-term, the site will be home to over 50 species of plants and trees, producing everything from almonds and apricots to lemon balm and lavender, harvested and planted using a hydrological approach.
Domaine Serraval is located in the unpolluted environment of the French Alps. Serraval's plants are grown at high altitudes, in harmony with the rhythm of nature, and enriched only with the natural substances used in organic farming. Traditional farming methods are used to avoid damaging the delicate ecosystem of the soil, rich in the earthworms who naturally aerate the soil and keep it healthy.
Both Serraval and Sainte-Colombe are managed in line with regenerative agriculture standards. This approach goes beyond sustainable farming to actually improve the environment, and reinforce the soil and biodiversity through natural methods from field to jar.

Why doesn’t Clarins use only organic ingredients?
Of course, Clarins continues to prioritize plant extracts that use certified organic agricultural methods. Currently, 59% of our Herbarium is made up of organic plants. We’re aiming for 80% by 2025.
For ingredients that are neither organically grown nor certified organic, we do our best to work with our suppliers to convert them to organic. In 2021 alone, we supported and confirmed 13 conversions to organic agriculture.
